Rainbows.

June 11, 2010 by Scott Sturges | 0 Comment »

This is my first post to this blog, out of High School, without being graded, without any of that.

Yesterday, on my way downtown, as I was leaving my house, I spied, not 1, not 2, but 3 rainbows in the sky (you can only see two in this photo). I happened to have my camera handy, so of course I had to photograph it. I decided that since I had just finished my final on HDR, this would be a good chance to utilize it. I took three bracketed exposures on AEB (auto exposure bracketing) handheld – that was no easy feat.

The (Urban) Decay of Nampa

April 11, 2010 by Scott Sturges | 5 Comments »

Last week, my photography class traveled to Boise to compete in a photography competition through SkillsUSA Idaho in Boise, Idaho. Our class competed in two different competitions, Photography, and Promotional Bulletin Board. Later, I’ll post the whole bulletin board project as I am finally done with it and I presented it successfully (1st place FTW).

Anyway, for the photography competition, we were bussed to Columbia High School in Nampa, Idaho to begin the competition. After we picked up some more students, we all went to Downtown Nampa for the shooting portion. We were assigned to shoot the Urban Decay of Nampa.

Below are the shots I chose and edited for the competition.

I ended up using the alley way shot a book cover project for the book Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Unfortunately, I do not have the originals for all of them, just the ones I edited, because the judges kind of stole our cards. So below I posted a contact sheet with the originals. Finally, the inspiration of this post was completely the judge, as he set the requirement for it to be urban decay, so I can’t really post an inspiration link this week.

Ghoti

January 18, 2010 by Scott Sturges | 1 Comment »

The past week, I worked on doing some fish tank shots. I tried some ink, coins, and other random things that looked like they would be cool to drop in there. I positioned the fish tank on my counter, and placed two strobes (1 behind, 1 to the side). I proceeded to take some sweet ink shots.

The real reason I did the ink shots, was simply because they look pretty awesome. I really don’t think they are my most amazing photographs, but they look pretty cool. My brother and I purchased the fish tank from some dude on Craigslist for $10. Pretty good deal for a 10 gallon glass tank.

After my brother did his shots, I figured I might as well do them also, so really the inspiration for this project is his post.

Ghoti is a constructed word used to illustrate irregularities in English spelling. It is a respelling of the word fish, and like fish is pronounced /ˈfɪʃ/. It has,

  • gh, pronounced /f/ as in tough /tʌf/;
  • o, pronounced /ɪ/ as in women /ˈwɪmɪn/; and
  • ti, pronounced /ʃ/ as in nation /ˈneɪʃən/.

Color (and the lack thereof)

October 9, 2009 by Scott Sturges | 3 Comments »

Stephen - Red BGThis week, I was forced at gunpoint to do a project relating to color. Ok, not really, but it makes a good story!

Anyway, I decided to shoot some portraits of mi hermano. I shot photos on various backgrounds that had bright colors, then I desaturated all other colors to bring attention to main color. I think it turned out pretty good.

The photo to the left was shot in front of the San Francisco Sourdough Eatery (quite possibly the best sandwich shop ever). It was closed at the time, so the red gate made a great background.

The next image is next a green door, and I desaturated mostly all colors except green and cyan. I was originally going to desat cyan also, but I thought it looked good as this way.

Also, I just noticed a weird Safari bug, it seems to make images look less saturated than they are in Photoshop… So the image looks way different than what it did when I was editing it.

On another note, I shot some senior photos for a friend, and they just got back to me with some more photos that they wanted me to edit. So I went through and edited more, and made some adjustments to the original images.

These images were shot a while ago, but recently they contacted me to do some more editing.

The inspiration for these images is: This flickr pool

So what your saying is that you finally got around to posting your blog and you want me to go and look at it again?
