Idioms
For my latest edition to this blog, I decided to take some photos representing Idioms. Sure… I was told to do it, but I still made the decision to photograph the idioms.
I started by searching Google for idioms, a site with seemingly all English idioms showed up first. I searched through the rather large list and made a list of the ones I wanted to attempt. I settled on:
- No dice

- Against the clock
- Back seat driver
- Cross your fingers
- Hit the books
- Kick the bucket
- Knock on wood
- Let the cat out of the bag
- On the fence
- Scot-free (I like this one, it has my name in it!)
- And add fuel to the fire
Knowing that I probably couldn’t accomplish all of them, I started out with an easy one… Adding fuel to the fire. I simply lit up a good fire, and added some “fuel” to it. In this case the “fuel” was wood that I was adding to the fire. In all honesty, this didn’t turn out as awesome as I had hoped… It turned out totally different than I had expected, but I still feel that the effect was achieved.
Exif:
- Shutter: 5 sec.
- Aperture: f/16
- ISO: 100
- Focal Length: 28mm
- Exposure Program: Manual
- Camera: Canon 50D
- Lens: Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-4.5
There were a few other photos from this shoot, which I have included in the contact sheet. Take a look below.
While I was taking these photos, I decided that I had better hit the books and get studying for an upcoming test… so I did.
This was an experiment really. I was really shooting for something similar to an Apple ad, you know an object, seemingly in oblivion that is completely white except for the subjects. The first one is a corrected version of the second one. I received some feedback regarding the distracting 91539 on the pages… so it’s gone now. Anyway, I feel that I got rather close to it, but no cigar (no, I will not do a photo for this idiom). It seems a little splotchy on the shadows and the vignette seems awkward. But nonetheless, it is decent. OH, and I felt quite proud that I was able to use my SkillsUSA hammers from Lowe’s.
EXIF:
- Shutter: 1/250th
- Aperture: f/20
- ISO: 100
- Lens: Canon 50mm f/1.8
I am hoping to post my other idioms soon!

That is one fine looking hammer in the hit the books shot.
One thing I noticed- you say hit the books yet there is A book there, so it would be hit the book? Did you try taking out the ID number on the pages of the book? It is a little distracting, not too bad but does draw the eye away.
The adding fuel to the fire image is nicely done.
Do you have an easy way to copy and paste the exif data? Let me know
